Shock absorbers and suspension: the difference between stopping short and stopping late.
Worn shocks add metres to an emergency stop and ruin handling long before they leak. We inspect without obligation, quote in writing and fit the right unit for how you drive.

What we cover
Shock absorbers come in more types than most people realise, and fitting the wrong one is as common as fitting a worn one. We supply and fit standard shocks, gas shocks, heavy-duty units for 4x4s and commercial vehicles, and air-adjustable shocks for people who tow. Beyond the shocks themselves we repair the rest of the suspension: coil and leaf springs, stabiliser bars and links, bushes and mounts.
Everything starts with an inspection that costs nothing and commits you to nothing.
Why worn shocks matter
- A car with defective shock absorbers can need up to 2.6 metres more to stop in an emergency. That is the difference between a near miss and a claim.
- Poor handling from tired suspension puts you and your passengers at real risk, especially in the wet.
- Shock absorbers keep the tyres pressed to the road, which is what makes steering accurate and braking effective.
- They also smooth out bumps and jolts, keep the car stable at speed and give you that planted feeling of all four wheels firmly on the ground.
Danger signs of worn shock absorbers
- The car slides or fails to hug the road through bends.
- Bald patches or cupping on the tyres.
- The nose dips sharply when you brake.
- Oil seeping down the outside of a shock.
- The car feels unstable in side winds or when passing trucks.
- Vibration through the steering wheel at speed.
Why have it done here
We are one independently owned workshop in East Tamaki, staffed by technicians who work on hybrid, European and Japanese cars all day. We know which models eat rear springs, which utes need heavier units than the catalogue suggests, and which European cars need the electronic damper settings reset after a change.
- The inspection is free and obligation-free, with a written quote for anything we recommend.
- Two-year guarantee on parts and workmanship.
- Wheel alignment checked after every suspension repair, because new shocks on an old alignment wear tyres fast.
Replacement options
Standard shock absorbers
Engineered to match the vehicle’s original specification. The right choice for most cars that are driven normally.
Gas shock absorbers
Pressurised gas units give a ride that exceeds the original equipment, with a more consistent and controlled response to every road surface. A sensible upgrade for anyone who drives briskly or on rough roads.
Heavy-duty gas shocks
Built for commercial vehicles and 4x4s. Larger than the originals, built to a higher specification, and designed for long life under load.
Air-adjustable shocks
For occasional heavy loads such as towing a boat, caravan or trailer. They work as a heavy-duty shock day to day, with an inflatable air bag that supports the extra weight when you need it.
Each unit type carries its own manufacturer’s warranty. We confirm the exact cover with your written quote.
Other suspension repairs
Springs, stabiliser bars, links and bushes wear just as shocks do, and a knock over bumps is more often a link or a bush than a shock. We repair all of it. Springs for towing and for lowering vehicles are a specialty.
What happens next
Book a suspension check online or send an enquiry below. We confirm by text or email. After the inspection you get a written quote and a straight answer on whether the work is urgent. Nothing beyond what you approve is carried out.
Common questions
How do I know my shocks are worn?
The car wallows or fails to hold its line on bends, nosedives under braking, feels unstable in side winds, or the steering wheel vibrates. Bald patches on the tyres and oil on the outside of the shock body are the physical giveaways.
How often should shocks be checked?
Every 25,000 km, or any time the handling changes. They are also checked during every WOF and every one of our service packages.
Which type of shock do I need?
For most cars, standard or gas units that match the original specification. Utes, 4x4s and vans that carry loads do better on heavy-duty gas shocks. If you tow a boat, caravan or trailer now and then, air-adjustable shocks let you add support only when it is needed.
Do you fit lowering or towing springs?
Yes. Springs for towing and for lowering a vehicle are a specialty, and we align the car afterwards.
Do I have to commit to a repair to get an inspection?
No. The inspection is free and without obligation. You get a written quote and decide from there.
